Taking pictures at night is one of my favorite genres of photography, especially when it is foggy. Moody, dramatic photos are the norm. Last night (Feb 17) at Apple Haus Inn we had a lot of fog. Thick fog is typical when we get some warm air over cold snow. The air quickly saturates and creates a wonderful world to photograph.
Here is a quick photo to capture the scene from our guest house, looking North down the driveway toward Highway 6. This shot was taken hand-held, so a high ISO and large aperture are needed to capture a photo with a reasonably high shutter speed for hand-held shooting. The higher ISO does create more noise. However, the noise creates a "texture" in the fog and gives a night photo more character.
I converted the image to B&W, since the scene is monochrome there is no advantage to keeping what little color there is. In a later blog post, I will talk more about noise and grain in night photography, and split toning for added effect.
